πΊ Transgender Day of Remembrance
Today, November 20, is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day where we come together to reflect, honour, and take meaningful steps to support our transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse community members.
This day was founded in 1999 by activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith in memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was tragically murdered in 1998. Ritaβs death brought urgent attention to the violence faced by transgender people and highlighted the need for awareness, reflection, and support.
Twenty five years later, this day has become a global day of remembrance and solidarity.
In Canada, 70 percent of trans youth have experienced some form of harassment or violence β a number that represents real people: peers, friends, and family members.
There is an urgent need to ensure that transgender individuals feel:
β’ Physically safe
β’ Psychologically supported
β’ Fully respected in their identity
To all who identify as transgender: you are seen, you are heard, and you are valued.
