LT Update Beacon House Shelter

Dear LT Families,

Last week, I attended the information session about the Beacon House Shelter on Metropolitan Avenue, across the street from Leslie Thomas Junior High.

As principal, it was important for me to be there to hear from the broader school community. Student safety was a common theme at the meeting. I have also heard from several families who share this concern, so I wanted to provide everyone with the same message.

I want to assure you that LTJH is committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming school environment for all students and staff. Like all schools in HRCE, our exterior doors are locked throughout the school day. All visitors are required to buzz in and provide a reason for entering the school prior to gaining access. All visitors are required to then report to the main office.

Staff provide outdoor supervision before and after school, and the VP and I, along with our two lunch monitors, provide outdoor supervision during lunch hour.

In addition, we will be hiring two additional student monitors to provide extra support. Monitors will be present for the entire school day, and will be in the hallways, and walking the perimeter of the school yard.

What can you do?

As our partners in your child’s learning and well-being at school, we are looking to families to lean in with support. Here’s what you can do:

We’re always looking for additional lunch monitors! If you, or someone you know, would like to support lunch supervision, please let me know.
Apply to be a student monitor! Reach out for more information.
Please have conversations with your children. Remind them that if they see something that appears to be suspicious or unsafe, to say something. There is always a trusted adult in the main office.
Our students are amazing individuals, who have supported our vision of creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive school community. I know that we’re successful because they reflect the greater school community. It is my absolute pleasure to be the principal of this school and to be part of this community.

Thank you for your attention and understanding. Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or if you would like more information about our open positions.

Take Care,

Derek Ferguson
