Good evening parents and guardians of the LTJH community,
Please take a few minutes to review the following updates.
👩💼 Staffing Update
Vice Principal Lisa MacNeil will be away until June 1.
Rona Chisholm will be covering during this time.
Please also join us in welcoming Mr. Duplex Siewe to Leslie Thomas Junior High. Mr. Siewe will be filling in for the remainder of the school year for Ashley Deveau, who is on maternity leave.
Mr. Siewe can be reached at duplex.siewe@hrce.ca.
Grade 8 Provincial Assessment, RWM8
Grade 8 students will take part in the Nova Scotia Assessment for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, also known as RWM8, between late May and early June.
This assessment includes reading and writing tasks connected to Grade 8 curriculum outcomes, reading passages from a variety of genres, reading comprehension questions, one essay writing task, one story writing task, mathematics questions, multiple choice questions, problem solving tasks, and tasks requiring different levels of thinking and application.
French Immersion students will complete the mathematics portion of the assessment in French.
Please see the attached flyer from EECD for more information.
🚴 Bike Season
Bike season is here, and students are encouraged to ride their bikes to school.
Please make sure bikes are locked up during the school day. We have noticed some students riding bikes around school property at lunch. Students need to be careful and respectful, as there are many students and staff walking around the building and parking lot areas.
Helmets are expected, and students are reminded to practise smart and safe bike riding at all times.
🚫 Lunch Delivery Reminder
Food deliveries, including DoorDash, Uber Eats, and SkipTheDishes, are not permitted at LTJH.
This is due to supervision concerns, as students cannot leave lunch areas to meet drivers, and deliveries create disruptions to the school day.
🚭 Vaping and Smoking Reminder
We ask families to reinforce with their child that vaping and smoking are not permitted anywhere on school property, inside or outside.
This is both a school rule and a legal requirement. If a student is found vaping or in possession of a vape:
• The device will be confiscated
• Parents or guardians will be contacted for pickup
• The student will face suspension
• In some cases, this may involve Halifax Regional Police under the Smoke Free Act
Families are also encouraged to visit the Nova Scotia Government Department of Health website for important information about vaping:
Part way down the page, there is a link called Talking With Your Teen.
Thank you for your support in reinforcing this expectation.
🥤 Drinks at School
Open drinks are not permitted in classrooms.
This includes items such as pop, energy drinks, iced caps, or other open beverages. Students are encouraged to bring water in a spill proof bottle.
Teachers will ask students to dispose of open drinks before entering class. We appreciate families reinforcing this expectation at home.
🧼 Respect for Our School and Community
We have noticed an increase in littering on school property and in the surrounding community.
Please speak with your child about taking pride in their school, respecting shared spaces, and properly disposing of garbage.
Working together helps keep our school clean and welcoming for everyone.
🦁 Now Hiring Lunch Monitors
We are hiring 2 to 3 paid Lunch Monitors for daily supervision.
• Monday to Friday, 12:10 pm to 1:10 pm
• $16.75 per hour plus 4% vacation pay
Interested applicants are invited to contact sonja.moore@hrce.ca.
Please feel free to share this opportunity with friends, family members, or community members who may be interested in supporting students at LTJH.
