Good Evening Parents/Guardians of the LTJH Community:
Here is a look at the week ahead!
LT Celebration of Success Assembly
We will be celebrating student success at our final assembly during the afternoon of Tuesday June 21st. As the whole school will be in attendance for this assembly, only Grade 8 parents of major award winners will be in attendance and have already been notified.
During our LT Celebration of Success on Tuesday afternoon there will be a Smudging at the start of the ceremony. Below is a summary of what smudging involves and attached is a FAQ sheet.
Smudging is a tradition common to many First Nation People. Smudging refers to the burning of one or a combination of the sacred medicines; sweet grass, sage, cedar, and/or tobacco involving one or many people. Tobacco used as a sacred medicine is different than it being used recreationally. Also, at no time will the tobacco or any smudge material be inhaled directly or intentionally. A smudge produces a distinct aroma but the smoke associated with it is minimal and lasts a very short time.
A smudge is burned primarily for purification and to help to create a positive mind set.
The provisions of the Smoke Free Places Act of Nova Scotia http://novascotia.ca/dhw/healthy-communities/smoke-free-places-act.asp are not applicable to smudging because subsection 3(2) of the Act reads “Nothing in this Act affects the rights of Indigenous people respecting traditional Indigenous spiritual or cultural practices or ceremonies.”
